Full Time Imam Position

Alhamdulillah, Jamaat Ibad Ar-Rahman (JIAR) is actively seeking an Imam in a leadership role to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of its senior Imam. The Imam fulfilling the spiritual and social needs of our diverse community is deeply rooted in a strong foundation of Islamic knowledge according to the Holy Quran and Sunnah of Prophet Mohammed (SAW) to intelligently lead and navigate us through the issues we face today. 

JIAR has been serving the Muslim community of Durham and neighboring areas in North Carolina for over 40 years, by providing places of worship and other services including Islamic schools, outreach (Dawah), funeral home, cemetery and food pantry. Our mission is to establish and facilitate the practice of Islam in the area based on the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) by educating, empowering, and uniting our dynamic and diverse community through religious practices and beliefs of the Islamic faith.

Position type: This is a leading Imam position with full-time employment reporting to the JIAR Board of Directors through the Chairman. Imam responsibilities stretch over both Masjids of JIAR with assistance from Assistant or Associate Imam(s).

Education: A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Islamic studies or equivalent fields from a recognized Islamic university or institution.

Salary: Commensurate with experience, qualifications, and demonstrated leadership

Duties: Imam provides visionary leadership with ability to unify and strengthen our community through Islamic education and inspirational guidance to all members including youths and children in the community to help navigate through Islamic and other obligations in life. Imam provides a vision on how to strengthen and expand our current institutions and programs (schools, dawah, youth, etc.). The other duties of the Imam include but are not limited to:

• Leading daily prayers, and Jumu’ah, Eid and Taraweeh prayers.
• Conducting halaqas and other activities on Tafsirul Quran, Hadith, Seerah, and Fiqh for adults and children.
• Organizing youth activities, and overseeing programs in schools and the outreach efforts to the non-Muslim community.
• Leading Janazah prayers and conducting marriages.
• Supervising and mentoring junior Imam(s).
• Communicating with local Imams, faith leaders, and media on JIAR positions to relevant events and affairs.
• Consultations to the board on religious matters and community issues.
• Counselling and guidance to family and youth of the Jamaat.

Requirements:

• A person of high moral standards able to lead by example.
• Work experience as an Imam or Assistant Imam for at least 5 years in North America.
• Comprehensive knowledge on all aspects of Islam (Qur’an, Sunnah, Fiqh, Aqeedah).
• Must have high proficiency in both English and Arabic essential for skillful communication with Muslim and non-Muslim leaders.
• Recitation of the Qur’an with proper Tajweed and memorization of at least 10 Juzz of the Qur’an, but a full
• Hafiz with Ijazah will be given preference.
• Ability to teach the Qur’an and religion, and conduct outreach programs with knowledge and wisdom
• A dynamic personality with ability to engage with young adults and senior brothers and sisters, with a keen focus on youth programs as they relate to daily life.
• An inspirational speaker and leader with ability to engage with people of different cultures and backgrounds for positive impacts on the community.
• Ability of conflict mitigation and consensus building.
